SUCCESS WITH A NEW COMMISSION

In August 2002, the re-constituted Tennessee Health Facilities Commission convened hearing months of awaiting certificate of need (CON) application projects. The very first project heard was a proposed physician owned multi-specialty ambulatory surgery center in Gallatin, Tennessee. Sumner Regional Health Systems opposed the approval of this application. On behalf of Sumner Regional, NHA completed a comprehensive analysis of the CON application and underlying assumptions, preparing the necessary health planning and financial information to demonstrate the project did not meet a community need, was not financially viable and did not contribute to the orderly development of healthcare in the area. The first project presented to the new Commission was unanimously denied.

TWO NEW HOSPITALS PLANNED FOR FLORIDA

NHA is proud to announce that two new specialty hospitals received CON approval from the State. Both are the first of their kinds relative to new construction in the past decade. One is a 40-bed freestanding long term acute care hospital in Sarasota and the other is a 60-bed comprehensive medical rehabilitation hospital in Springhill. The Springhill hospital just broke ground; the Sarasota hospital will break ground next year. NHA conducted the health planning and financial support to demonstrate that these hospitals were both needed and warranted approval in moving forward and successfully facilitated with the State.

BOOK PUBLISHED

The book Analyzing Senior Housing Markets by Susan Brecht was recently published and is now a best seller at the Urban Land Institute bookstore. Based on their extensive knowledge of the dynamics of the senior living industry in Florida, Patti Greenberg and Eve Mart of NHA contributed the Florida case study and associated analysis in the book.
